Nelson Mandela turned 94 yesterday! At club, the kids sang "Happy Birthday" to him. It was adorable. Since it was Mandela Day, everyone in South Africa was encouraged to do some form of community service for 67 minutes (age when he was released from prison). A lady came by Mountain View and dropped off cupcakes for the kids. She was going around to the communities giving them out to all of the kiddos! What a cool thing that people can participate in to celebrate Mandela!
Since this week at club is hygiene week, we have been teaching the kids how to wash their hands properly, brush their teeth, when to bathe, etc. At club yesterday, I was asking Melissa more about the community of Mountain View. Since they live in tin shacks, they obviously don't have plumbing so the government came in and built small public restrooms. Melissa said that the people in Mountain View take hygiene very seriously because of so many infections in the sand, so that's why the kids all have beautiful skin. It's also a way that they can carry themselves well, in regards to the people of Ocean View and the segregation that takes place. I have asked both Melissa and Lauren about the segregation issues and if there is any public figure trying to eradicate it, but both have said that no one has done anything to remedy the situation. I know that the LSE's try their hardest to mix the MV and OV kids as much as possible within the clubs, so they are definitely making an effort. Very interesting situation that needs prayer!
After club yesterday, we stopped at Long Beach to see the coast, which is right down the road from where we live. Beautiful area filled with surfers and dog walkers. Once we got home, we ate a delicious dinner (bangers & mash) and then I spent some time in the kitchen with Ms. Bernie and Ms. Anita. Great day yesterday!

Today was also a fantastic day. This
morning the summer interns helped Tim at the main office with the shoe project
again! We are still sorting the pairs and mismatched pairs in order to
box them up to sell. In 2 weeks, we are putting on a shoe sale for all of
the Living Hope staff to come and buy some shoes. Next week we will be
working on prices for each pair. After working with them for about 4
hours, we headed back home to eat lunch. Mia and I decided to head
upstairs and take a glorious nap before leaving for kids clubs.
Club was in Ocean View today at the main office. When Will and I got there, we saw Chanette talking to some teens outside. We quickly noticed them holding a chameleon lizard!!! It's not every day you see a chameleon! Both of us were very entertained with it for quite a while.
Cute little guy! |
